We believe people can make Glasgow a National Park City.

Gaining National Park City status will make us part of an international community of cities who believe that supporting each other and working together with the National Park City Foundation, we can make all our futures Greener, Healthier and Wilder.

The designation will help celebrate, support, amplify and connect the fantastic communities, individuals and organisations who can together create a Greener, Healthier Wilder Glasgow - for everybody.

An important step in getting our National Park City status is showing we have your support.  So if you share our vision and that belief - please add your support:

Glasgow National Park City Charter

We believe in a future in which Glasgow is:

  • A place where everyone is engaged with nature and the outdoors.

  • A city where nature is thriving and spaces and places are connected.

  • A city that’s reducing its ecological and environmental impact.

  • A place where connecting people and nature helps deliver social and environmental justice and reduces inequality.

  • A place where every child has the chance to learn and have fun in nature every day.

  • A city with clean, healthy air and water.

  • A city where people are proud of their natural and cultural heritage.

  • A place where everyone has access to green, healthy, sustainable travel.

  • A city nearing the top of health and wellbeing tables instead of the bottom.

  • A place where excellent design delivers buildings and spaces that respond to the needs of people and nature.

  • A place where everyone feels empowered and inspired to make our city greener, healthier and wilder.

Glasgow has incredible spaces of hidden biodiversity. Living alongside wildlife, makes everyday life richer and happier. Strangers stop and talk to each other on seeing a kingfisher, or a heron. These are special moments of connection. At the same time, there are housebuilders, contractors and businesses, that dump waste into our rivers (e.g. the White Cart River), and have done so for many years with impunity. Fly tipping is endemic in some parts of the city. I hope a Park City will have more powers to tackle these problems, and will support a healthier, greener environment for everyone.

Designating Glasgow as a National Park City reaffirms and raises the profile of the relationship we all have between an urban living and working context and the wider natural environment which is vital for our health and wellbeing. We always need a bit more green in our lives, whether at work or play!
